My Running History
![]()
It all started early 2009, when a small seed was planted and then watered. And fertilized.
I started in on my first fun run in June 2009, with just a small run of 2km (Spectrum Fun Run). I was still disillusioned as to my abilities and capabilities as I had been a fit teen with a impressive set of abs, a brown belt in karate and able to run 5km in 33 minutes. The fitness soon disappeared as I spent the next 13 years having and raising children to the point where I was craving adult activities and wanting them to accommodate me. Well not really, but I was needing to do something for myself with other adults apart from sit around and chat (which I was relatively new to also, and I still enjoy doing with my friends).
Since the very first fun run, things just started moving on and up. I still huffed and puffed but I increased my distances with the next fun run happening to be 5km in the ‘Bridge to Brisbane’. I also started going to a running club near by. I was so nervous to join all of these buff, fit and attractive people in their sport of choice. I felt out of place and more conscious then I had previously. They had biceps, triceps, abs, calves, and good running strides. None of which I had, and am still working on.
Since those first 2 introductory fun runs, I have done a few more lengthier runs. A 6km Bribie Beach Bash (58 minutes), 10km Hares & Hounds run at Woodford (1hr 31 minutes), and an 8km Dirt Fest trail run (1hr 10 minutes). There have been lots of club runs happening, and time trials at club, none of which I come in any better then last, but you want to know the best thing. I don’t care that I come last, I care that I finish and know that I can improve, over time.
I have just started couch to 5km, properly, which I probably should have done months ago. On top of this I walk a hilly road once a week and am enjoying it (the views are amazing from the top).
My main motivator? Well, she is the mum who planted that seed early in 2009. Add on top of that wanting to be healthy and give the kids a good role model, I have come to a point where I can only go on and forward. The kids and husband have now joined me!
